Overseas Born by Years Resident

These maps show the percentage of the overseas born population by the number of years since arrival, for each territorial authority area and each Auckland board area at the 2006, 2013 and 2018 cenuses. ‘Years since arrival' give an approximation of overall length of time in New Zealand, irrespective of periods outside of New Zealand, as they are based on the census question ' If you live in New Zealand but were not born here ... When did you first arrive to live in New Zealand?'

The data for each area (that is, each number of years since arrival for each area) sums to 100%. In each case, the deeper red/orange colours denote the higher percentages, the paler yellow/pink/white colours denote smaller percentages.

Overseas Born Percentage of Population

These maps are based on the census question: ‘which country were you born in?’ They show the percentage of each territorial authority and Auckland local board area’s population that was born overseas, irrespective of years since arrival, at the 2006, 2013 and 2018 censuses. The deeper red/orange colours denote the higher percentages, the paler yellow/pink/white colours denote smaller percentages. The impact of recent international migration to parts of the South Island is particularly noticeable – also go to the maps for ‘overseas born by years of residence’ and compare those for ‘up to 5 years’ with ‘5 to 10 years’.
