These maps show the relative percentage contribution of net internal migration, net international migration and total net migration to the total population change of each regional council area, between each of the three census periods 1996-2001, 2001-2006 and 2008-2013.
Red colours denote positive contribution (e.g. deepest red = greatest contribution, palest pink = smallest contribution), blue colours denote negative contribution (deepest blue = greatest negative contribution, palest blue = smallest negative contribution).
The data are drawn from the MBIE-funded project Nga Tangata Oho Mairangi (NTOM) (The Impact of Demographic Change on New Zealand's Communities), and converted for data visualisation by the CaDDANZ Population Atlas research team. See for additional detail and important methodological notes.
